The City of Everett is accepting applications on an open/competitive basis for the Civil Service examination process for Network Support Specialist. All vacancies in this job class will be filled from the ranked Civil Service register established from the examination process until the register expires in 12 months or is depleted. Union membership is required within 30 days of hire.
Job Description:
This is highly responsible technical work in the areas of development and support, project coordination, and troubleshooting related to network systems. Depending on the functions of the position to which assigned, an employee in this classification performs network analysis, support, and programming.
The work involves the study and documentation of specific business and system requirements; and planning, scheduling, and coordinating efforts to install and upgrade various network systems. The work also involves supporting PC's, Servers, and related hardware and software to support network systems. Employees in this class may program using various programming languages. As technology changes, the employees' focus and skills will progress and the appearance of their duties and assignments will evolve; but they will continue to be expected to perform at the level and scope intended for this classification.
Additional duties may include network systems planning, integration, support, cost analysis, and creating and presenting training materials. The work is performed with some independence under the general guidance of the supervisor or designee. Employees in this classification may be required, at times, to support a combination of assignments as assigned by the supervisor.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Perform the same tasks as PC and Client Services Technician positions but with greater responsibility, awareness, judgment, and proficiency. Perform network administration functions. Perform server configuration and maintenance, and identify and address security and performance issues. Configure and maintain new and existing network systems. Respond to network system issues. Support network systems including operating systems, security, telecommunications, and utilities. Maintain routing infrastructure for the City's Internet and Intranet web site functionality. Oversee installation of hardware and software. Provide technical assistance, training materials, and training to co-workers and end-users. Assist outside vendors with installation and upgrades of network systems as directed. Use root cause and needs analysis to resolve network systems issues. Create and maintain network systems documentation. Define and prioritize network systems goals and requirements. Participate in or assist with the design, maintenance, troubleshooting, and documentation of network systems infrastructure. Monitor the performance of network systems after implementation. Act as technical lead on network systems upgrades and/or implementation. Perform related work as required.
Qualifications:
The following knowledge, skills, and abilities are essential and critical to successful performance in this position:
Knowledge of:
Enterprise monitoring and troubleshooting tools to resolve network hardware, software, and security systems issues. Data network physical layer including copper and fiber cabling standards. Wireless networking standards. Ethernet and IP standards and protocols. DNS, Security, IP Routing, HTTP, VPN, Email Routing, SPAM, etc. Cisco Firewalls, VPN and Security appliances. Cisco and HP Switches and Routers. WAN and Local Area Networking. Multi-server environments, including IP address schemes, DNS, WINS, DHCP, etc. Client and server network software for upgrading and maintaining network systems. Maintenance of network application systems. Setup and configuration of computer hardware, software, and peripherals. Switches, Routers, and network management tools. Network application troubleshooting using basic Microsoft troubleshooting tools. Windows Server OS and Active Directory. File and Print Servers and Print Services. Microsoft Exchange Enterprise in a clustered environment. Enterprise level data backup systems. Project management procedures and acumen.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
Graduation from a recognized four year college or university with a degree in business, math, computer science, or a closely related field and A minimum of three (3) years of increasingly responsible experience supporting, troubleshooting and documenting data network related applications and hardware which should include experience supporting Servers and server operating systems as well as network Switches and Routers or Any combination of education and experience sufficient to provide the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities.
EXAMINATION AND REGISTER ESTABLISHMENT
All interested applicants are required to submit

3) a cover letter clearly detailing applicant's relevant work experience and training and
4) the NETWORK SUPPORT SPECIALIST supplemental questionnaire.
A limited number of applicants with the highest passing grades on the supplemental questionnaire (weighted 40%) will be invited to an oral panel evaluation (weighted 60%). A passing grade of 70.00 or higher is required on all parts of the screening process for placement on the ranked Civil Service eligible register. The examination is designed to sample and measure the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities.

The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
